Welcome to the first of our new bespoke ✨monthly level tests✨. This was the most requested new feature by paid subscribers, and I’m excited to get it into your hands (or inboxes)!
It’s best to see this edition as a bit of a trial. French with Amélie has always been a collaboration between me and my readers, and this is no different!
I’ve learned trial and error is the only way to truly find out the perfect formula for new features: format, difficulty, content etc. You’ll find a super quick reader survey after the test - completing it will help me adjust and improve for April!

Let’s face it, there is just too much damn shame around testing! And it’s made me nervous about even giving my students a formal level-test in this way.
Learning French is a journey, and your French ‘level’ is a big wibbly-wobbly fluid unstable thing that can NEVER be summed up in one word, number, or letter.
‘Testing’ in school and college was often filled with shame and inferiority, competition and ranking and pride. We can leave all that behind as adults (many of us don’t!) but it tends to come up again as soon as we start testing our language skills. EVERYONE I know is insecure about their language level, and I am determined not to feed the beast! 😤
Take what’s useful, leave the rest
Regular, easy, consistent testing will, however, definitely help some students. Help them stay motivated and help them see their progress.
But if it does the opposite… I encourage you to just move on! “Take what’s useful, leave the rest” is great advise in life and language-learning. Please do not under any circumstances get discouraged and rundown because of the results of this test. That’s an order!
Whatever allows you to *keep going* is the most important thing of all.
✅ These Monthly Level-Tests are not designed to be comprehensive and arduous, but a quick, simple (dare I say—fun?!) window into how your French is doing.
All the colloquial phrases were included in this month’s dialogues, so it keeps you accountable and fits in a bit of review as well.
