Lost my cart in aisle 7. Found it in aisle 12. Someone had filled it with baguettes. Welcome to French supermarket mysteries. Today we're diving into the art of navigating French grocery stores without losing our sanity (or our shopping carts).
J'ai perdu mon chariot au rayon 7. Je l'ai retrouvé au rayon 12. Quelqu'un l'avait rempli de baguettes. Bienvenue dans les mystères des supermarchés français. Aujourd'hui, nous plongeons dans l'art de naviguer dans les épiceries françaises sans perdre notre santé mentale (ou nos chariots)

Paul : Margot, penses-tu que les gens sont naturellement bons ?
Margot : C'est une question très philosophique. Mais nous sommes français ✪! Nous devrions avoir des opinions fortes sur ce genre de choses.
Paul : Peut-être que ✪ nous, en tant qu'êtres humains, ne sommes pas intrinsèquement bons. Peut-être que nous le sommes. Peut-être que nous sommes un mélange ✪ de bien et de mal.
Margot : On est certainement né avec un sens du bien et du mal ✪, je pense.
Paul : En fait, j’ai travaillé avec des tout-petits ✪. Quand les tout-petits voient quelque chose qu'ils veulent, ils le volent ✪ immédiatement à un autre tout-petit. Ils sont égoïstes, bien que ✪ personne ne leur ait appris à être ainsi ✪.
Margot : On dirait que tu as trop lu “Sa Majesté des mouches” ✪. Tous les enfants sont-ils vraiment de petits sociopathes ?
Paul : Les humains, je crois, naissent égoïstes, méchants et indifférents. La gentillesse est apprise. Et pour être gentil, il faut lutter contre la nature humaine. C'est pourquoi la gentillesse est si impressionnante.

Tom: Excuse-moi, tu ne saurais pas où je peux trouver un chariot ? Je viens d'arriver ➹ en France et je suis un peu perdu dans ce supermarché.
Léa: Ah, il faut mettre une pièce d'un euro dans la fente du chariot pour le débloquer. C'est le système ici. Attends, je vais te montrer.
Tom: Merci, c'est gentil! Je n'en reviens pas ➹ du choix de produits bio ici. Chez moi aux États-Unis, les produits bio coûtent une fortune, mais ici les prix sont vraiment raisonnables ✪.
Léa: C'est vrai que les prix sont plus abordables ✪. Tu devrais voir le rayon fromages, c'est impressionnant! Il y en a pour tous les goûts.
Tom: Je vois ça! J'aimerais bien tout goûter. Et regarde ces viennoiseries en promotion, elles ont l'air délicieuses. Si j'habitais plus près, j'en prendrais plus.
Léa: Fais attention quand même, il faut que tu puisses tout porter jusqu'à ton appartement. La dernière fois, j'ai tellement acheté que j'ai dû appeler un ami pour m'aider.
Tom: T'as raison. Je me laisserais facilement tenter par tous ces produits. Le camembert est à moitié prix, et ces croissants aux amandes... Mais bon, je vais devoir me limiter. Je n'ai que deux bras après tout!
Léa: Si tu veux un conseil, prends un sac à roulettes ✪. Ça change la vie quand on fait ses courses à pied. Et puis comme ça, tu pourras te faire plaisir avec plus de fromages!
Tom: Excellente idée! Je vais commencer par l'essentiel aujourd'hui, mais la prochaine fois, je reviendrai mieux équipé.

This is a (delayed) grocery store Part 2. Well, because there’s so much going on in a grocery store! I’m trying something new here, seeing how repeating dialogue topics might help us reinforce the new vocabulary. So there’s repetition. Let me know how you find it in the replies or comments!
les produits bio = it’s true! One of the things it makes me most proud to be French about - our organic game is amazing!
abordables =
pas chers ➹ = affordable. Colloquial French would probably just say ‘pas chers’ fyi. "Les vins français sont étonnamment abordables quand on habite en France."
sac à roulettes = chariot de courses = wheeled shopping bag. That might sound crazy if you don’t have them in your stores, but they’re the go to over here.
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
Translation
T: Excuse me, would you know where I can find a shopping cart? I just arrived in France and I'm a bit lost in this supermarket.
L: Ah, you need to put a one-euro coin in the cart's slot to unlock it. That's the system here. Wait, I'll show you.
T: Thanks, that's kind! I can't believe the selection of organic products here. Back home in the United States, organic products cost a fortune, but here the prices are really reasonable.
L: It's true that the prices are more affordable. You should see the cheese section, it's impressive! There's something for every taste.
T: I can see that! I'd like to try everything. And look at these pastries on sale, they look delicious. If I lived closer, I'd take more.
L: Be careful though, you need to be able to carry everything to your apartment. Last time, I bought so much I had to call a friend to help me.
T: You're right. I could easily be tempted by all these products. The camembert is half price, and these almond croissants... But well, I'll have to limit myself. I only have two arms after all!
L: If you want some advice, get a wheeled shopping bag next time. It's life-changing when you're shopping on foot. And that way, you can treat yourself to more cheese!
T: Excellent idea! I'll start with the essentials today, but next time, I'll come better equipped.

My favorite aisle? It's got to be the yogurt section. You might think that's a strange choice, but hear me out. In my local Monoprix, it's like a miniature United Nations of dairy. There are yogurts I didn't even know existed - lavender-honey, chestnut, salted butter caramel. The other day, I spent 20 minutes helping an American tourist who was completely overwhelmed by the choice between 15 different vanilla yogurts. "But they're all vanilla!" she kept saying. I had to explain that each one tells a different story - this one's from Alpine cows, that one's from Normandy, this other one is made by monks who've been perfecting their recipe since the Middle Ages.
