Mathéo : Alors, quel est ton film préféré de tous les temps ✪?
Inès : Hmm.. dirais que c'est "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain". L'histoire est touchante et la bande ✪ originale est absolument magnifique. Ça me donne toujours le sourire.
Mathéo : Ah, le charme parisien ! Pour moi, c'est "Jurassic Park". Le frisson ✪ des dinosaures qui reviennent à la vie... C'est comme un voyage en enfance, tu vois ?
Inès : Jurassic Park ? Sérieusement ? Tu préfères des dinosaures qui sèment le chaos à une douce promenade dans Paris ?
Mathéo : Oh oui, l'adrénaline ! Les effets spéciaux étaient révolutionnaires à l'époque et sont toujours incroyables. Le mélange de suspense, d'aventure et de science-fiction, c'est parfait pour moi.
Inès : D'accord, c'est vrai que les effets spéciaux sont impressionnants. Tu sais, je ne suis pas surprise. Tu es le genre ✪ de personne qui aurait un T-Rex comme animal de compagnie ✪ si c'était possible.
Mathéo : Exactement ! Imagine ça, un T-Rex dans mon jardin ! Ça aurait de la gueule ✪.
Inès : Je ne préférerais pas. Je tiens à ma vie, merci ! Et tes voisins et les pompiers ne seraient pas d'accord, je pense.
Mathéo : Peut-être, mais imagine la tête du facteur ✪!

de tous les temps ✨ = qui ait jamais existé = of all time
la bande originale = film : musique officielle = the soundtrack “On veut utiliser tes chansons pour la bande originale” (We want to use your songs for the soundtrack)
le frisson = shiver, but also ‘thrill’. “Ces gars-là éprouve le frisson de la chasse.” (These here guys enjoy the thrill of the chase).
être le genre à = be the kind of person to, be the type to. genre = type, sort, kind
du genre ✨= of that sort, of that kind “Enfin, vous n'êtes pas du genre fainéant” (Well, you're not the lazy type), “J'aimerais bien manger des fraises, des framboises ou un truc du genre” (I'd love to eat strawberries or raspberries or something like that)
animal de compagnie = yes, this is the standard French word for ‘pet’ 🤷🏼 Seems a little long-winded to me too. Eyes peeled in the coming weeks!
ça aurait de la gueule = Ça a de la gueule ! ✨🧩 (colq.) = C'est bien beau ! = That looks great!
la tête du facteur = the postman’s face. “Aujourd'hui le facteur m'a apporté un colis” (Today the postman brought me a parcel)
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
Translation
M : So, what's your favourite film of all time?
I : Hmm... I'd say it's "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain". The story is touching and the soundtrack is absolutely magnificent. It always puts a smile on my face.
M : Ah, Parisian charm! For me, it's Jurassic Park. The thrill of dinosaurs coming back to life... It's like a trip back to childhood, you know?
I : Jurassic Park? Are you serious? You prefer dinosaurs wreaking havoc to a gentle stroll through Paris?
M : Oh yes, the adrenalin! The special effects were revolutionary at the time and they're still incredible. The mix of suspense, adventure and science fiction is perfect for me.
I : It's true that the special effects are impressive. You know, I'm not surprised. You're the kind of person who'd have a T-Rex for a pet if it were possible.
M : Exactly! Imagine a T-Rex in my garden! It would look great.
I : I'd rather not. I value my life, thank you! And I don't think your neighbours or the fire brigade would agree.
M : Maybe, but imagine the postman's face!

These dialogues are a very simple tool. Yet this allows them to be versatile and endlessly flexible to you and your learning style.
Here’s one way you could use the dialogue this week:
🥪 Listening sandwich - Listen to the recording x3 times, then read the dialogue and fill in your understanding, then listen again.
This is a great way for beginners to boost their oral comprehension in small helpful doses. Listening first exercises your brain, and listening again after studying allows you solidifying the connections. It’s also encouraging as you can see what you’ve learned !
