Today’s dialogue will have you covered.
And I want to hear those juicy love stories in the comments you hear!

Dialogue du Jour

Evan : Salut Pauline, tu as déjà été amoureuse ? ✪

Pauline : Oh, salut Evan. Eh bien, oui, j'ai déjà eu le coup de foudre ✪. Toi ?

Evan : Ah vraiment ?

Notes

être amoureuse = to be in love / have fallen in love

le coup de foudre = love at first sight. Younger french people use this in other contexts sometimes now eg. “le coup de foudre amical” is a thing.

une liaison = relation amoureuse = an affair. You have this word ‘liaison’ too in English no? These are always the easiest words to remember because there is already a connection somewhere in your brain!

être fou d'amour 🧩 = be madly in love / lovesick “Tu vois, obsédé, pathétique et fou d'amour” (You know, obsessed, pathetic and lovesick.)

tout comme = de la même façon que = just like. “Il est grand, tout comme ses parents.” (He’s tall just like his parents.)

“C’est tout comme” = c'est presque pareil = he/she might as well have / it’s close enough. Ex. (Ok, the meat isn't raw but it might as well be)

sortir avec = date/go out with (someone)

*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.

Translation

E: Hi P, have you ever been in love?

P: Oh, hi E. Well, yes, I've (actually) been in love at first sight. Have you?

E: Really? Me too, once. It was an intense affair. I could tell I was madly in love with her.

P: That's so romantic! What attracted you to her?

E: She was passionate about classical music concerts, just like me. Every note of music she enjoyed seemed to reinforce my affection for her.

P: It's amazing how music can bring people together. Are you still going out with her?

E: No, unfortunately it didn't work out. But it made me realise how important it is to share common passions in a relationship.

P: I'm sorry to hear that, E. But yes, sharing common interests is a beautiful thing in love.

E: Yes, exactly. Have you ever experienced love at first sight like that?

P: Of course, I think everyone has had that feeling at least once. And like you, I'm optimistic about the future.
