Bastien: Salut Raph! Oui, je suis un grand sportif. Je fais du foot, du basket, du volley et de la natation. Et toi, tu pratiques un sport ?
Raphaelle: Non, pas vraiment. J'ai essayé de faire du tennis une fois, mais j'ai fini par me faire très mal au dos ✪ et j'ai passé une semaine à marcher comme un canard ✪.
Bastien: Ah, c'est pas de chance ✪! Mais il y a plein d'autres sports ✪ que tu pourrais essayer. Tu pourrais faire du jogging, du vélo...
Raphaelle: Oui, peut-être. Mais j'ai toujours été un peu maladroite, donc j'ai peur de me blesser.
Bastien: Oh, t'inquiète pas trop. Ne laisse pas ça t'arrêter.
Raphaelle: Ouais, mais comme on dit : "il vaut mieux prévenir que guérir" ✪!
Bastien: C'est vrai, mais si tu ne prends pas de risques, tu ne profiteras jamais des joies du sport !
Raphaelle: T’as raison. Peut-être que je devrais essayer quelque chose de plus doux, comme la marche ou la natation.
Bastien: C'est une bonne idée ! Et qui sait, peut-être que tu te découvriras une passion pour le sport.
Raphaelle: Oui, qui sait... mais pour l'instant, je vais rester sur le canapé avec un bon vin.

Emma : Oh.. chais pas ✪. Je suis pas certain. Un de mes amis dit que c'est une sensation similaire à celle d'être beurré, d'être ivre ✪. T’es complètement submergé par le sentiment.
Mathéo : C'est bien ça, je pense. Pour moi, c'est une réaction immédiate, généralement d'abord ✪ sur l'apparence d'une personne, comment elle est habillée ✪, comment elle bouge, sa voix, et comment elle te regarde.
Emma : Je comprends ce que tu veux dire, mais pour moi.. en fin de compte ✪.. ce n'est pas l'amour - pas le genre d'amour qui est nécessaire pour un mariage à long terme.
Mathéo : Un point de vue intéressant. J'imagine que tu veux dire que tu dois aimer l'esprit➹ de quelqu'un, son caractère, ses valeurs, sa personnalité, ses compétences. Tu ne peux pas télécharger ✪ tout ça instantanément en voyant quelqu'un.
Emma : Exactement ! Le coup de foudre ne garantit pas l'amour au deuxième coup. Il faut vraiment connaître quelqu'un pour pouvoir dire que tu es amoureux➹.
Mathéo : Je vois ce que tu veux dire. L'amour doit être plus profond que ce qu'on voit au premier regard.

✪ Notes
chais pas = (also written) chépa = je ne sais pas (as it’s actually spoken by most french people). You may recall we covered Y a (il y a) and chui (je suis)➹ in previous editions.
beurré = bourré = ivre = drunk! The best way to learn vocabulary is enmeshed in the context of the language itself—that’s one of the biggest reasons I put so much time into these dialogues. Because of this I often try to introduce new words in a context that makes it clear what they mean. Like here, where the (maybe unfamiliar) beurré is quickly clarified by the more common ivre. Always try and understand first, check the notes second.
The goal is always that these notes—as good as they are!—are a last resort.

d'abord = en premier lieu = firstly/first (of all) “Tu aurais dû d'abord te mettre de la crème solaire. “ (You should have put some sun cream on first) tout d'abord = added emphasis on firstness.
elle est habillée = how she is dressed. to wear (des vêtements) = porter / mettre
en fin de compte = at the end of the day ”En fin de compte, c’est elle qui a raison” (In the end, she's right). Alt. (colq.) au final “Au final, ça n’était pas si difficile !” (In the end, it wasn't that difficult!)
télécharger = download. upload? télécharger (or maybe charger). Yeah, French had some hiccups with adopting words for early 2000s tech.
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
Translation
M : E, do you believe in love at first sight?
E: Oh, I don't know. I'm not sure. A friend of mine says it's a feeling similar to being drunk. You're completely overwhelmed by the feeling.
M : That's right, I think. For me, it's an immediate reaction, generally based on a person's appearance, the way they're dressed, the way they move, their voice and the way they look at you.
E: I understand what you mean, but for me... at the end of the day... that's not love - not the kind of love that's necessary for a long-term marriage.
M : An interesting point of view. I guess what you mean is that you have to love someone's mind, character, values, personality, skills. You can't download all that instantly when you see someone.
E : Exactly! Love at first sight doesn't guarantee love at second sight. You really have to know someone to be able to say you're in love.
M: I know what you mean. Love has to be deeper than what you see at first sight.

🥪 Listening sandwich - Listen to the recording x3 times, then read the dialogue and fill in your understanding, then listen again.
This is a great way for beginners to boost their oral comprehension in small helpful doses. Listening first exercises your brain, and listening again after studying allows you solidifying the connections. It’s also encouraging as you can see what you’ve learned !
