January is the time of year when new language adventures often begin, or people recommit to old ones. And I can’t wait to be part of your language journey for 2024.

Axel: Alors Lucie, as-tu pensé à tes résolutions pour la nouvelle année 2024 ?
Lucie: Oui, je vais jeter un œil ✪ sur mes habitudes alimentaires. Je pense qu'il est temps de manger plus sainement.
Axel: C'est une bonne idée. Moi, je vais être prems ✪ à me remettre au sport régulièrement. Ça fait trop longtemps que je remets ça à plus tard.
Lucie: Ah, le sport ! Ça vaut le coup ✪, surtout pour la santé. Je devrais peut-être te suivre dans cette voie.
Axel: Absolument, et si nous faisions ça ensemble ? On pourrait se motiver mutuellement.
Lucie: Mais en parlant de motivation, je me dépêche ✪ de lire plus de livres cette année. C'est essentiel pour ma croissance personnelle ✪.
Axel: Je suis d'accord. Je vais essayer d'apprendre une nouvelle langue. Peut-être l'espagnol ?
Lucie: L'espagnol, quelle belle langue ! Tu devrais vraiment le faire.
Axel: Oui, et je vais aussi essayer de voyager plus. Il est important de découvrir de nouvelles cultures.
Lucie: Tu as raison. Voyager ouvre l'esprit. Moi, je vais travailler sur ma patience. Parfois, je me sens trop impulsive.
Axel: C'est un bon objectif. La patience est une vertu, après tout.
Lucie: Nos résolutions semblent prometteuses pour 2024, non ?
Axel: Absolument, ça va être une année incroyable !

✪ Notes
je vais être prems✨(sur) = I'm going to be first. The way young French people say ‘shotgun” or “dibs”.
ça vaut le coup ✨🧩= ça en vaut la peine, ça mérite l'effort = It's worth it
Idéal pour motiver quelqu'un (ou soi-même) à faire un effort pour un résultat désirable. Face à une grande montagne à escalader: "Regarde la vue, ça vaut le coup!”. Used regularly to ask if something is worth it: “Est-ce que ce film vaut le coup ?”
jeter un œil✨ = take a look / ‘run your eye over’ something
je me dépêche = se hâter = I'm hurrying. Running late again? "Je me dépêche" is your go-to phrase! It's the perfect way to express your rush without sounding too frantic. It's like saying, "I'm on my speedy Gonzales mode!" For instance, "Je me dépêche, le film commence dans 5 minutes!" (I'm hurrying, the movie starts in 5 minutes!)
la croissance personnelle = personal growth. This is for when you're A. feeling philosophical, B. trying to impress someone at a party, C. talking about New Year’s resolutions. French makes even soul-searching sound chic. Say, "Je lis beaucoup pour ma croissance personnelle." (I read a lot for my personal growth.) Voilà, you're now a French philosopher!
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
Translation
A : So L, have you thought about your resolutions for the new year 2024?
L: Yes, I'm going to take a look at my eating habits. I think it's time to eat healthier.
A : That's a good idea. I'm going to start doing sport again regularly. I've been putting it off for too long.
L: Ah, sport! It's worth it, especially for your health. Maybe I should follow your lead.
A : Absolutely, why don't we do it together? We could motivate each other.
L: But speaking of motivation, I'm hurrying to read more books this year. It's essential for my personal growth.
A : I agree. I'm going to try and learn a new language. Maybe Spanish?
L: Spanish, what a beautiful language! You should really do it.
A : Yes, and I'll also try to travel more. It's important to discover new cultures.
Lucy: You're right. Travelling opens your mind. I'm going to work on my patience. Sometimes I feel too impulsive.
A : That's a good goal. Patience is a virtue, after all.
L: Our resolutions look promising for 2024, don't they?
A : Absolutely, it's going to be an incredible year!

These dialogues are a very simple tool. Yet this allows them to be versatile and endlessly flexible to you and your learning style.
Here’s one way you could use the dialogue this week:
👄 Beginner ‘Shadowing’ - Listen to the recording and read the dialogue aloud at the same time.
Repeat this at least x3. You will be surprised at how you can self-detect mistakes. It’s the best way not only to master colloquial speech, but accent and intonation as well.
