Coucou ma communauté francophone 🌍
The new year has me going back and covering more of the basics than usual. Kind of a mini-reset in a way. I often find even advanced students can have missed out on some fundemental little colloquial phrases and constructions which have just.. never been made explicit to them.
So even if you find the dialogues on the easier side at the moment, really hone in on what I highlight in the ✪ Notes and make sure it’s part of your active French. And you can always get the brain pumping with the Défi de difficulté 🧠🔨!
That’s what it’s there for - so I’ll trust those looking a challenge will use it for just that.
And I have some more.. challenging dialogues coming up next week, so keep your eyes peeled. 👀

Jean : Par curiosité ✪, ça m'intéresse toujours de connaître les gens.
Lucie : D'accord ✪, je vais te le dire mais tu dois promettre de ne pas te moquer de moi.
Jean : Je te le promets, je suis un ami fidèle et je n'ai jamais ri de quelqu'un.
Lucie : Mon deuxième prénom est Marie.
Jean : Marie? C'est un très joli prénom. Mais c'est aussi très courant ✪.
Lucie : Oui, c'est vrai. C’est le nom de ma grand-mère et c'est pour cette raison que mes parents me l'ont donné.
Jean : Ah, je vois ✪. Et moi, mon deuxième prénom est Robert. Mais tout le monde m'appelle Bob.
Lucie : Bob? Pourquoi tu te fais appeler Bob alors que ton vrai prénom est Robert ?
Jean : Parce que c'est plus court et plus facile à dire. Et puis ✪ ça sonne bien, non ?
Lucie : Je ne sais pas, ça dépend des goûts. Personnellement, je préfère Robert.
Jean : C'est bon de savoir ça, maintenant je sais comment te faire rire. Je vais te dire un secret : Robert, c'est mon nom de scène ✪.
Lucie : (riant) Ton nom de scène ? Tu es comédien ?
Jean : Non, pas vraiment. Mais j'adore faire des blagues et mettre les gens en joie. Alors, je me suis dit que Robert serait un nom de scène parfait pour moi.
Lucie : (riant) Tu es vraiment drôle, Jean. J'aime être ami avec toi.

✪ Notes
par curiosité ✨ = par simple intérêt = out of curiosity = Have you ever wondered why cats always land on their feet? Well, par curiosité, I asked my neighbor's cat, but sadly, she just meowed and walked away.
d'accord = okay. The universal nod of approval and a universal filler! When my friend asked if I wanted to try snail pizza, I bravely said, "D'accord!" and immediately regretted it.
très courant = commun, habituel = very common / everyday / popular = In France, finding a bakery on every corner is très courant. It’s what you want your French to be!
je vois ✨ = ah, je comprends = I see, I understand. The perfect phrase for commiserating or assuring someone, it means “I get it” and you’ll hear it often if you start listening.
Et puis… = et ensuite, de plus = and then, moreover. Add more to your story! kind of like saying, "Wait, there's more!" Like when you're telling a friend about your day: "J'ai mangé une baguette, et puis, I saw a dog wearing a beret!"
un nom de scène = un pseudonyme artistique = a stage name = the secret identity of every artist.
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.

Jean : Si j'avais le choix, j'aimerais que mon vrai prénom soit plus unique. Cela rendrait les présentations plus mémorables, tu ne penses pas ?
Lucie : Peut-être, mais il est important que nous appréciions les noms que nos parents nous ont donnés. Ils portent souvent une signification particulière et une histoire familiale.

Yo, tell me, what is your middle name?
Hi Jean, why do you want to know my middle name?
Out of curiosity, I'm always interested in getting to know people.
Okay, I'll tell you but you have to promise not to make fun of me.
I promise, I'm a loyal friend and I've never laughed at anyone.

Marie? That's a very pretty name. But it's also very common.
Yes, that's true. It's my grandmother's name and that's why my parents gave it to me.
Ah, I see. And me, my middle name is Robert. But everyone calls me Bob.
Bob? Why do you go by Bob when your real name is Robert?
Because it's shorter and easier to say. And then, it sounds good, right?
I don't know, it depends on personal taste. Personally, I prefer Robert.
It's good to know that, now I know how to make you laugh. I'm going to tell you a secret: Robert is my stage name.
(laughing) Your stage name? Are you an actor?
No, not really. But I love making jokes and bringing joy to people. So, I thought Robert would be the perfect stage name for me.
